Flushed Away2006

Roddy is a decidedly upper-crust "society mouse" who lives the life of a beloved pet in a posh Kensington flat. When a sewer rat named Sid comes spewing out of the sink and decides he's hit the jackpot, Roddy schemes to rid himself of the pest by luring him into the "whirlpool." Sid may be an ignorant slob, but he's no fool, so it is Roddy who winds up being flushed away into the bustling sewer world of Ratropolis. There Roddy meets Rita, an enterprising scavenger who works the sewers in her faithful boat, the Jammy Dodger. Roddy immediately wants out, or rather, up; Rita wants to be paid for her trouble; and, speaking of trouble, the villainous Toad - who royally despises all rodents equally, making no distinction between mice and rats--wants them iced... literally. The Toad dispatches his two hapless hench-rats, Spike and Whitey, to get the job done. When they fail, the Toad has no choice but to send to France for his cousin - that dreaded mercenary, Le Frog.

Film has been full of great partnerships. Butch Cassidy and Sundance were a terrific, possibly the pinnacle, partnership because their talents were complimentary and supportive. Others have made a cheese-grater look a more attractive prospect of torture. The combination of traditional, eccentric Aardman studios with the revolutionary, cinematic-industrial powerhouse of Dreamworks could have created a result in either category with 'Flushed Away'.

Pet rat Roddy (Hugh Jackman) of Kensington has his plush, comfortable and lonely world invaded by the unwelcome arrival of sewer-rat Sid. World-wise scheming not being his forte, Roddy ends up flushed down the toilet and thrown into the subterranean world of Sid's kind. He meets enterprising scavenger Rita (Kate Winslet) with whom he forms a rocky relationship when he becomes embroiled with a plot by pompous, aristocratic The Toad (Sir Ian McKellen).

Initially proposed to Dreamworks by Aardman in 2000 after 'Chicken Run', 'Flushed Away' became an attractive prospect after the completion of the Wallace and Grommit feature-length masterpiece and pirate series featuring a certain Johnny Depp. The major pieces of the partnership fell into place as Dreamworks pushed for the kind of urgency unheard of with the stop-motion animation of Aardman's golden cash cow.

The result is highly impressive. 'Flushed Away' is entirely computer-animated to a wonderful degree of quality. Visually, the presentation falls between the rustic, traditional appeal of clay-models and the jaw-dropping computer clarity of works such as 'Shrek'. By linking arms with Dreamworks, the sets and sequences are far more ambitious than had previously been attempted in Aardman productions-water no longer being a visual headache.

Script and humour are provided by Aardman in trademark British fashion: the mockery of the class difference between Rita and Roddy and pomposity of the Toad, the football world cup jokes will not be lost on their victim and the vicious parody of the French (Jean Rino subjecting himself fantastically to this end). The storyline is scarcely the most interesting of Aardman's but the ingenuity and over-complexity of machines common to them are again used with awesome aplomb.

With a score that doesn't relent on humour or atmospheric contribution, 'Flushed Away' uses the voices of a supporting cast including Bill Nighy and Andy Serkiss brilliantly. Dreamworks and Aardman's partnership may have lost some of the magic from both epic and minute respectively, but the combination of their talents pays off in a thoroughly watchable, amusing and entertaining movie.

From the creators of Wallace & Gromit, were introduced to a world of Vermon who live in London's most unfinest sewages. And to most thier unwanted pesky creatures but in this movie there lovable, smart and humanised characters.

Just as good as Chicken Run, and better than Wallace and Gromit, Flushed Away manages to bring a cute story, while bringing action and laughs along the way. Fantastic!

There is nothing. No humor. No drama. No action. 'Oh my goodness! A mouse gets flushed down a toilet! And then.. nothing, then nothing, then no-was that supposed to be funny? I think so, but it wasn't. Movie over.' Terrible.

I was pleasantly surprised at how much I actually enjoyed Flushed Away. I will be honest, I wasn't expecting to much heading into this film but I really did enjoy it. The characters are pretty interesting and there are some pretty good jokes scattered throughout the film.
