Vanity Fair2004

The British Empire flowers; exotic India colors English imaginations. Becky Sharp, the orphaned daughter of a painter and a singer, leaves a home for girls to be a governess, armed with pluck, a keen wit, good looks, fluent French, and an eye for social advancement. Society tries its best to keep her from climbing. An episodic narrative follows her for 20 years, through marriage, Napoleonic wars, a child, loyalty to a school friend, the vicissitudes of the family whose daughters she instructed, and attention from a bored marquess who collected her father's paintings. Honesty tempers her schemes. No aristocrat she, nor bourgeois, just spirited, intelligent, and irrepressible.

Over 2 hours and 20 minutes of intrigue and real life drama is easy to follow only if you're a historical movie fan... but Mira Nair makes you become one if you're not! Solid work!

I found it a bit boring at times, and I was left wondering most of the time what was going on. This is one of those movies where you just stop caring about everything halfway through, except I stopped caring thirty minutes in.

Although the movie boasted outstanding cinematography, costume and makeup, it did not boast much acting.

I found myself a little bored with the movie. It was better off for me to read the book. It delviered much more emotion.

It was only the sensuality which hit me!

This film is based on the literary classic Vanity Fair. It is about woman of humble origin strong desire to climb up the social ladder, sometimes relentlessly and ruthlessly. There are many good points about this movie. The sets are elegantly designed, and they are visually appealing. The costumes are also elegant and fits the vanity theme of the film. The dialogues are literary and educated. The frequent use of poetry in the film could become pretentious in some films, but this is not the case in Vanity Fair. In fact it adds to the style and complexity of the characters in this film. This film is a pleasant movie to watch!

I was bored, it was boring... I hated it.
Except, Ryan Gosling really is a good actor.

    Charlotte's Web
It was cute. Buscemi was awesome. Roberts, not so much.

Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny
    A+ Sound. Killer Rock 'n Roll Fairy-tale.

    I rewatched Vanity Fair
    It is manipulatively beautiful.

An interesting look at the contemptuous people that society breeds. Even though this takes place in the 1700's it mirrors what we see in society today. A harsh look at status and the pain of trying to become more than you were born into. Despite the advances of the world, this is a sad reality even today. Interesting, yet aggrivating to watch. I had seen it once before but had sadly forgotten I had seen it at all, quite in the style of Gone with the Wind for me, a character I couldn't come to like, however in this case, I couldn't quite despise her either. She was a product of what was around her, unfortunately.
